LAURIE BECK PETERSON

RECENT WORKS IN NON-SILVER

A continuation of the last body of work shown at High Point, I have attempted to further explore landscape and light, it’s relationship to my journey of reflection and solitude in nature, and the non silver process. The five depopulated landscapes shown together are layered in veils of color in an effort to portray the translucent quality of our surroundings.

The chosen process of an initial layer of cyanotype and subsequent layers of gum bichromate, allows for the colors to emerge from beneath, and reveal hidden details not first seen by the eye. The intentional lack of human figures serves to strip the viewer of themselves and forces them to see light and texture with an ethereal quality.

The pieces produced in platinum/palladium begin to introduce more of the human hand, with a constructed hut, locomotion, a dwelling and people. Intentionally produced in a single layer process of platinum/palladium, there are no veils of color but rather a rich tonal quality achieved by the smoothness and richness of this process.

All images are captured with pinhole and holga cameras, allowing me to experience their uncertain and inexact nature. From there my experience is about the process of rendering them in a non silver process that conveys my vision, and solitude of the long hours it takes to produce one piece.
